SYFY PICKS UP HIT SERIES EUREKA FOR 5th SEASON

NEW YORK – August 17, 2010 – Syfy is greenlighting its hit original dramedy Eureka for a 5th season, it was announced today by Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Syfy and Co-Head of Content for Universal Cable Productions, which produces the series.

Eureka seems like any other cozy, Pacific Northwest town, but is actually a secret community of geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research. What they’ve unwittingly created is a place where anything imaginable can happen… and does. Eureka stars Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Joe Morton, Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston, Niall Matter, James Callis and features Jordon Hinson. Co-creator Jaime Paglia and Bruce Miller are Executive Producers.

Since Eureka’s 4th season premiere on July 9, 2010, and with the most recent Live +7 data factored in, the show is averaging a 2.2 HH rating and more than 3 million total viewers per week (1,335 million Adults 18-49 and 1,531 million Adults 25-54).

In addition to great ratings, Eureka has also achieved new creative heights including: a time-altering storyline that has reset the series raising both the drama and stakes for the main characters; the addition of James Callis (Battlestar Galactica) as the new character ‘Dr. Charles Grant’; a first-ever crossover episode with Syfy’s Warehouse 13, a top-notch lineup of special guest stars including Ming-Na, Jaime Ray Newman, Ed Quinn, Wil Wheaton, Jamie Kennedy, Chris Parnell, Matt Frewer and Felicia Day; and a recently announced holiday episode slated to air in December.

“Eureka remains a steadfast performer for Syfy with its superb cast and perfect blend of drama, comedy and eye candy,” said Stern.  “Given what Jaime, Bruce and their entire team have done collectively to reinvent the show this year, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for season 5.”

Eureka airs Friday nights at 9:00PM ET/PT on Syfy.

EUREKA AND WAREHOUSE 13 – SYFY’S MOST WATCHED SCRIPTED SERIES – TEAM UP FOR FIRST EVER CROSSOVER EPISODES

Warehouse 13′s Allison Scagliotti visits the town of Eureka and Neil Grayston of Eureka visits Warehouse 13

I participated in a phone press conference with these two Eureka and Warehouse 13 stars

Joshua Maloni:   So tell us a little bit about how this came about and what made the crossover appealing for both of you.

Allison Scagliotti: Neil, do you want to start or shall I?

Neil Grayston:  I – say you – you go ahead. Yes, you do the start because you’re the one who introduced yourself to me at Comic-Con.

Allison Scagliotti: That’s true, all right. I believe that the nugget of the crossover idea began when Neil and I met at last year’s Comic-Con, Comic-Con 2009. I watched the Eureka panel moderated by Josh Gates, which was hilarious. Then, at the Syfy party I marched up to Neil and I said, “Neil, let’s be friends.” And he said, “Okay, it sounds good.” We were inseparable from that moment on and we had this immediate dorky chemistry where we were finishing each other’s sentences and, you know, delivering punch lines at the same time. Our…

Neil Grayston:  Yes, that was weird that first time when we just made the same joke and we stopped, and we’re like we just made that joke at the same time. And…

Neil Grayston:   …we just made the same movements for that joke, too. That’s weird.

Allison Scagliotti:    Yes, we have the same sense of humor. We did on the set, too. And it really, you know, our chemistry played so well in life that I think our respective showrunners and, you know, the good people over at Syfy realized what a commodity it can be to blend these shows. But I think one really believes existing in the same universe and so here we are Claudia and Fargo at the center of this awesome crossover event.

Neil Grayston:  One year later.

Allison Scagliotti:  Yes.

CAST DOSSIERS

Colin Ferguson

Jack Carter, Eureka’s chronically overworked sheriff, faces critical changes in Season 4. Some, like daughter Zoe’s departure for Harvard, were expected. Others, including the appearance of a new rival for Allison’s attention, were not. But, no matter how things change in Eureka, one thing remains the same: Carter will continue rescuing the town from its own brilliantly created mishaps.

Ferguson stars in and is a producer of “Eureka.” He has also directed a number of episodes. He was in Bulgaria recently to direct a summer 2010 television movie, “Fossils,” for Syfy.

Ferguson’s many feature-film credits include “Because I Said So,” “Rowing Through,” and “The Opposite of Sex.”   Ferguson has also starred in a number of movies for television and was a regular on the NBC remake of the hit British comedy series “Coupling” and the sitcom “Then Came You.”  His many guest-starring roles include “CSI,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “Becker.”

Born in Montreal, Ferguson spent his childhood in Hong Kong, England, Connecticut and Toronto.  He took up improv comedy to put himself through McGill University and was a founding member of Detroit’s Second City comedy club while still in school.  Ironically, Ferguson considers these comedic experiences to be the foundation of his approach to drama today.

Before becoming a full-time actor, Ferguson worked in a variety of occupations ranging from high school teacher to participating in reforestation and even working as a mannequin.  Ferguson also worked on the assembly line at several General Electric light bulb factories (which, interestingly, is the parent company of NBC Universal).

Ferguson is a proud hockey fan and was honored to present the Masterton Trophy at the NHL awards last year. His love of travel has taken him to exotic destinations all over the world. Recently, Ferguson bought an old house and is taking part in renovating it himself.

Joe Morton

Eureka’s brilliant jack-of-all-trades, Henry Deacon, has the keen ability to figure out the mechanics of nearly any contraption and the physics of most phenomena. In Season 4, however, he finally encounters a situation that is as uncontrollable as it is unexpected.

Joe Morton recently completed the feature film “The Mulberry Tree.” Other film credits include “American Gangster,” with Denzel Washington, the independent film “Badland,” for which he composed and performed a song entitled ‘The Devil’s Lonely Fire.’ He also appeared in “Stealth”; “Paycheck” with Ben Afleck and Uma Thurman; “Ali” with Will Smith; “Dragonfly” with Kevin Costner; and “Bounce,” with Ben Afleck and Gwenyth Paltrow.

Film audiences perhaps best know Morton as “The Brother From Another Planet” (directed by frequent collaborator John Sayles), or as the ill-fated scientist in “Terminator 2 – Judgment Day.”  Morton’s film credits include “Lone Star,” “City of Hope,” “Speed,” “Executive Decision,” “The Astronaut’s Wife,” “Blues Brothers 2000,” “Tap” and Gary Sinese’s “Of Mice And Men” in which he portrayed Crooks.

On stage, Morton was a Tony-award-nominee for his portrayal of Walter Lee Younger in the musical “Raisin.”  He played Serge in the hit Broadway play “Art,” with Judd Hirsch and George Wendt, and was honored to be asked to join the company in London, where the show originated.  Also in London, he portrayed Colin Powell in the critically acclaimed “Stuff Happens” by David Hare.  Morton’s stage career has roots in the original production of “Hair.”

Television audiences have enjoyed Morton’s roles in the series “Equal Justice,” “Under One Roof” and “Tribeca” (for which he also directed an episode).  He played recurring roles on “Smallville,” “The Practice,” “CSI: NY” and “E-Ring.”  Morton has turned in noteworthy performances as Malcolm X in “Ali:  An American Hero”; the award winning cable feature “Miss Evers’ Boys” and spectacular guest star turns in “The X-Files” and “House.” Morton recently appeared in the SyFy series in “Warehouse 13″ and most recently as Daniel Golden in “The Good Wife.”

Morton is now pursuing various writing and directing projects (including directing episodes of Eureka in Season 4.

James Callis

Scientist Dr. Grant is a former resident of Eureka whose unexpected return is cause for serious alarm for all and significant friction for Sherriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), considering the debonair Doctor’s romantic interest in Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield).

London-born James Callis studied English and Related Literature at the University of York. After graduating in 1993, he gained a place at the renowned London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts. He graduated from LAMDA in 1996 and has since appeared in various West End stage productions, as well as in film and on TV and radio.

Callis’ role on “Eureka” marks a return to Syfy having garnered both critical acclaim and fan adoration for his portrayal of the self-serving, opportunistic and conniving genius, Dr. Gaius Baltar, on the award-winning series “Battlestar Galactica,” throughout the four-season run on the channel. Most recently he played Merlin in the telefilm “Merlin and the Book of Beasts,” guest starred on “Numb3rs” (CBS), and will soon be seen in the film “Re-Uniting the Rubins” co-starring Rhona Mitra and Timothy Spall, and guest starring this spring on “Flash Forward” (ABC).

Callis made his West End debut in “Old Wicked Songs” alongside Bob Hoskins in 1996, earning the London Critics Circle’s Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He appeared at the Almeida Theatre in George Bernard Shaw’s “The Doctor’s Dilemma” in 1998, and at the Soho Theatre in London last year in Peter Ackerman’s “Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight.” He broke into television in 1996 with a guest role on the British series “Murder Most Horrid” and with a recurring role in the ensemble of the long-running U.K. drama “Soldier Soldier.”

Callis went on to a number of telefilms and miniseries, including “The Scarlet Pimpernel” (1999) and “Jason and the Argonauts” (2000). He played Bridget’s pal Tom in the hit movie “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001) and its sequel “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004). He co-wrote and co-directed the film “Beginner’s Luck” (2001), in which he starred opposite Julie Delpy. He was Menelaus in USA Network’s miniseries “Helen of Troy,” and he has recently completed shooting in India for the feature film “One Night With the King,” with Omar Sharif and Peter O’Toole.

Erica Cerra

Josefina (Jo) Lupo, Eureka’s long-standing deputy sheriff, takes on a new and challenging job in Season 4. This former member of the U.S. Special Forces can more than handle herself in any situation — except, maybe, romance. Although Lupo is no longer in the Sheriff’s office, she and Carter find ways to continue their professional partnership. Her relationships with other Eureka citizens, however, undergo some major changes.

Erica Cerra’s recent film credits include the role of Hera in “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightening Thief” and “The Stranger.” On television, Cerra has had roles on SyFy’s “Sanctuary” and “Battlestar Galactica” as well as “Warehouse 13,” “Reaper,” “The 4400,” “The L Word” and “Smallville.”

Vancouver native Cerra chose her career in childhood and began performing in commercials. In her early 20s, she trained with Gina Chiarelli, Matthew Harrison and Larry Moss and launched into film and television.

Salli Richardson

Along with several of her fellow citizens, Allison Blake faces stupendous changes in Season 4. Upheaval at Global Dynamics, the demands of a new baby and unexpected developments with her son, Kevin, present challenges for Allison while a new man in town competes with Carter for her attention.

Among Salli Richardson-Whitfield’s most recent credits are the films “I Will Follow” and “Pastor Brown.” Her work in film and theater includes productions at the Pasadena Playhouse and key roles in such movies as “I Am Legend,” “Antwone Fisher,” “Anacondas: The Hunt for Blood Orchid,” “Posse,” “Low Down Dirty Shame” and “Biker Boyz.” She also starred in “Black Dynamite,” opposite Michael Jai White.

Her extensive list of television credits includes her starring role as attorney Viveca Foster on “Family Law” as well as recurring roles on “CSI: Miami,” “Rude Awakening” and “NYPD Blue.”  Richardson-Whitfield played a guest-starring role on the critically acclaimed series “House” and voiced the character of Elise for the animated series “Gargoyles.”

Richardson-Whitfield will make her directorial debut with an episode of “Eureka” Season 4.

Neil Grayston

Douglas Fargo may possess the intelligence to take on a more responsible role at Global Dynamics but, unless his luck changes, he may still be plagued by failed projects and embarrassing missteps, especially when General Mansfield is involved.

Neil Grayston played a recurring role as Alec The Mouthbreather on Fox’s iconic  dramedy, “Wonderfalls.”  He was nominated for a Leo Award (Canada) for his role as Martin, the stoic sous-chef, in the award winning comedy series “Godiva’s.”  Grayston’s guest starring credits also include “Smallville,” “Dead Zone” and “Supernatural.” He appeared recently in the Leo Award-winning short Sam Maynard’s “Best Day Ever.”

Grayston began acting in high school in Port Moody, B.C. and, after graduation, was cast in numerous guest star roles on Vancouver shot television series, including the critically acclaimed teen series Edgemont.

Grayston lives in Vancouver with his girlfriend and their cat.
