Synopisis: In Jimmy Loweree’s striking feature debut ABSENCE, doctors are baffled when a young expectant mother Liz (Erin Way, “Alphas”), wakes to find her nearly-to-term pregnancy disappear overnight.  The police are investigating the situation as a missing child case and only her husband, Rick (Eric Matheny, J. Edgar) and brother, Evan (Ryan Smale, Damage) trust her version of events. Told in the “found footage” style, Evan looks for answers by filming his sister’s experience.  The trio embarks upon a trip to the mountains to escape the attention of the police and prying neighbors.  When the trip spins out of control they realize that whatever happened with Liz and her baby isn’t over. None of them are safe.

MY THOUGHTS

On viewing Absence, you see the diary from a film student about his sister’s mysterious loss of her seventh month old baby. The found footage sub genre causes mixed emotions in me. It has to be used well otherwise it’s just a bunch of useless footage thrown together that tend to dillute the story. I thought that would happen here, but I was happily wrong. Yes, there’s footage of get togethers, dates, and characters getting on each other’s nerves,  but also mixed in with the characters sharing their feelings about the baby’s loss and Liz’s recovery played beautifully by Erin Way formerly of Alphas. When things go south at the end of the film, it has more of a dramatic impact. This is using the found footage sub genre properly. Filmmakers are at their core story tellers and Jimmy Loweree tells a gripping, at times funny, at times suspensful story nicely acted and anchored by Erin Way’s subtle yet emotionally gripping peformance.
