SyFy Reboots, But Wait, It Could Be Very Good

Yes the SyFy Channel is rebooting and before you roll your eyes , this is more like a re-focusing it’s brand to us fans and they to “embrace the core sci-fi audience” and not go broader audience according to new president Chris McCumber. He views a “ massive audience growth opportunity” as they want to attract fans who are passionate.

But the changes also apply to it’s long standing SyFy Wire whom he sees to have an “ESPN” like mantra. Here’s hoping that they reach out and connect with fans in a way that they have never done before. There is an opportunity here to really connect and attract fans.  With both moves, they want to put “fans and makers front and center” We were show some teasers that will be released that show a diverse fan base and how they connect with Sci-Fi in their lives. We also got a glimpse of Krypton in a teaser with a Kryptonian with an English accent (Seems to work on Krypton except for Zod , see Man Of Steel ) . McCumber states that Krypton is still in pre-production so what we saw might not be the finished product. They have also secured the rights to the Harry Potter films and The Fantastic Beasts films (first one and future) for airing plus rights to 14 Marvel movies. One reporter remarked that the Potter and Marvel films are on all the time. So what’s wrong with them being on SyFy. I never get tired of seeing them. On the surface it looks that SyFy’s new leadership gets it. Some of new programs are detailed in the following excerpts from the press release below..

Here’s me on my soapbox….

The Syfy Channel has changed since 1992 when they were the Sci-Fi Channel. If you recall it was a lot of reruns and movies and very little original shows. Recently the channel has been part of many sales and mergers that now leave them owned by Comcast. It gave us Battlestar Galactica and now The Expanse. Too many series bit the dust early, Being Human, Farscape just to name a few. They’ve stumbled and had some glorious victories too. SyFy also had no other Sci-Fi Channel to point to as an example. They are the first. This is a new viewing landsape, we fans control when we want to watch series and on what device. My DVR is always full. Mr McCumber told us reporters that if we have feedback we should give it. I plan to. This is a golden opportunity to get it right.  Like Alec Baldwin says in The Hunt For Red October, “Let’s give the man a chance”.  So I as a fan plan to .

  1. I’m so immensely excited for Krypton. That leaked trailer from Vimeo a few weeks back was absolutely legendary, and I want them to show more for the series, now that it’s been officially picked up.
